BYD Song L EV

2026-10-02 06:50:02

The BYD Song L EV is an all-electric D-segment shooting brake SUV developed and manufactured by BYD Auto. Positioned as a key offering in BYD's "Dynasty" line-up, the Song L EV marries the sleek profile of a coupe with the practicality and ground clearance of an SUV. Combining striking exterior styling with a highly integrated EV architecture, it establishes a distinctive competitive edge in the fiercely contested mid-size electric SUV market.

Model Overview

Widely acclaimed by the market as the "most handsome shooting brake SUV", the Song L EV is defined by its expressive exterior styling and cutting-edge electrification technologies.

Market tags: Mid-size electric SUV, shooting brake coupe styling, CTB battery-body integration, intelligent driving assistance.

Product highlights: Built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0, the model incorporates Cell-to-Body (CTB) battery integration, an intelligent electric all-wheel drive system, and the DiSus-C intelligent damping body control system. Its design language not only optimises aerodynamic efficiency—yielding a drag coefficient of just 0.255 Cd—but also delivers a low-slung, coupe-like stance that offers standout road presence in its class.

Market positioning: With official retail pricing falling largely within the RM180,000 to RM250,000 bracket, it targets the mid-to-high-end segment. The primary target demographic comprises young families and lifestyle buyers seeking a balance between sporty aesthetics, modern in-car tech, and practical day-to-day usability.

Development History

Background: As the buyer demographic for new energy vehicles skews younger, BYD set out to break the mould of conventional, homogenous mid-size SUV design by offering a model that harmonises emotive styling with robust engineering.

Evolution: The Song L EV made a swift transition from concept to production. Following its official market debut in 2023, BYD has continuously rolled out updates for its infotainment and driver-assistance suites, cementing its reputation as an intelligent EV benchmark.

Key milestones:

April 2023: The concept car made its global debut at Auto Shanghai, drawing widespread industry attention with its distinct shooting brake silhouette.

December 2023: The Song L EV was officially launched. Bolstered by competitive pricing and generous standard kit, it secured over 28,000 pre-orders during the pre-sale phase, quickly gaining a firm foothold in the B-segment pure-electric SUV market.

2025 Model Year Update: Benefiting from over-the-air (OTA) updates and hardware upgrades, the addition of the "God's Eye" advanced driver assistance system further elevated the vehicle's automated driving capabilities.

Market Performance

With its distinctive product persona, the Song L EV has successfully filled the premium, sporty void within BYD’s pure-electric SUV portfolio.

Competitive landscape: In China and international markets, its chief competitors include segment heavyweights like the Tesla Model Y. The Song L EV sets itself apart with a more generous 2,930 mm wheelbase, more lavish interior appointments, and a faithful execution of the shooting brake SUV concept.

Customer feedback: Owner feedback has centred largely on its "high-end exterior styling, generous passenger room, and solid, composed chassis dynamics." While the raked roofline does marginally compromise rear vertical headroom, its aerodynamic slipperiness and quiet NVH levels have drawn high praise on long-distance journeys.

Core Technologies

Chassis and structure: Built upon e-Platform 3.0 with CTB battery-to-chassis integration, torsional rigidity is substantially improved. Underneath, a double wishbone front and five-link independent rear suspension setup strikes a commendable balance between sporty handling and ride comfort.

Powertrain: Offered in single-motor rear-wheel drive (150 kW or 230 kW) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (combined output of 380 kW) guises. The dual-motor variant churns out 670 Nm of peak torque, delivering class-leading 0–100 km/h acceleration figures.

Battery and charging: Powered by BYD's proprietary Blade Battery (71.8 kWh or 87.04 kWh capacities), delivering a CLTC-rated range spanning 550 km to 662 km, supported by high-output DC fast charging.

Smart cockpit: Fitted with the DiLink smart infotainment system with 5G connectivity. On the active safety front, the DiPilot suite provides advanced driver assistance, automated parking assist, and seamless multi-scenario functionality.

Future Plans

As of June 2026, BYD's forward-looking roadmap for the Song L series focuses on:

Deepening intelligent tech: Plans are underway to further hone the capabilities of its end-to-end AI foundation model driving system via continuous OTA updates, refining active safety warnings in complex urban traffic conditions.

Line-up expansion: Capitalising on the Song L platform's success, BYD continues to explore further derivatives of the shooting brake model, including right-hand drive (RHD) versions tailored for export markets and bespoke interior configurations.

Efficiency enhancements: Ongoing refinement of the battery thermal management system (BMS) and electric motor efficiency ratios to further optimise cold-weather performance via software calibration while preserving driving range.
